Shopping Trolley Secrets

To better understand how the public feel about the use of their shopping data for research, we launched Shopping Trolley Secrets.

This 6-month exhibition was created in partnership with We The Curious Science Centre in Bristol. Shopping Trolley Secrets used lots of hands-on, creative activities to get people talking about shopping data.

For example, when people arrived at the exhibit, they could pick from a range of example shopping baskets and “vote” for the one that looked most like their own weekly shop.

Visitors could also build their own basket using props, and then use an iPad to enter the items they chose — giving a simple way to visualise how shopping habits can be used for research.

At the end, people could write questions or feedback on postcards and send them straight to our research team (and we replied to many of them!).

Altogether, Shopping Trolley Secrets welcomed over 33,000 visitors, many of which shared their thoughts on data ownership, privacy, and how we can continue using shopping data in our research.
